In Victoria, a conveyancer is licensed under the Conveyancers Act 2006 (Vic) to conduct property transfers.  To practice, conveyancers must complete a year-long diploma and a period of supervised training, and their actions are limited to those allowed under the Act.

A lawyer must complete a law degree from a recognised higher education provider, undergo practical legal training and receive a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, and be admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Victoria.

Lawyers are able to offer a broader range of legal services, whilst conveyancing is specialised to property transfers and acts permitted under licensing rules.
